WhoNews notifications

I just thought I’d give a few tips regarding notifications after receiving a two star review in the States, where a user complained of too many notifications.

Notifications are something people love or hate. Some fans want a constant stream of news pushed to them, others want to browse at their leisure.

WhoNews allows you to choose which notifications you want to receive, if any. Simply go to the settings page and scroll down. There are four categories of notifications you can turn on or off. Any changes you make may take around 30 minutes before notifications stop coming through depending on your network conditions and notifications already in the Apple Servers.

As always any problems or questions just use the send Contact Developer button, especially before leaving a poor review.

The WhoNews push notification system has recently sent its first million notifications to iOS users. The notification server ensures that fans are sent the latest news as it is found by the WhoNews servers.

Most users have news notifications turned on but did you know you can also receive notifications for blogs and podcasts as well. Just go to the settings tab of WhoNews, scroll down and turn on the notifications you want to receive.

Alternatively if you don’t want any notifications you can turn them all off.

    WhoNews Notification Tips

Checking the reviews of WhoNews this morning on iTunes, I’d received a 1 star review. The review said “Can't stand the constant updates. Receiving updates even after all updates disabled. Uninstalling product”

This really is a shame as the user hadn’t contacted me to see if I could help but had taken the time to write a negative review. WhoNews has a “Contact Developer” button on the Settings tab, so nothing could have been easier.

So I thought I’d give a little explanation on how to configure WhoNews notifications. Firstly you can configure which notifications you receive on the Settings tab but you need to be in connected to the internet as WhoNews contacts the notification server to tell it what your preferences are. It does this the instant the you change a setting.

Once you’ve changed a setting it may take a little while to stop receiving those notifications as they may already be queued in the Apple Push Notification System.

Whenever WhoNews starts it resends your settings to the Notification server just in case your app and the server are out of sync. So if your notification settings seem incorrect, try killing WhoNews and then starting it again.

Don’t forget if you want to disable sounds, change the way notifications are displayed or disable ALL notifications from WhoNews you have to do this via your iOS device Settings -> Notifications -> WhoNews which is outside WhoNews itself.

Above all if you have a problem with WhoNews please just contact me, I will always strive to help. WhoNews has received over 70 5 Star reviews from around the world and it is a record I’d like to maintain if given the chance.

    Thanks

    Paul.

    WhoNews Notification Update

The WhoNews notification issue where repeated notifications were being sent has been identified as a performance issue on the server. I’ve implemented a fix and will be testing today, so I apologise for any duplicate notifications you may receive today.

    *Update*

The fix appears to be working well and normal service has been resumed.

    WhoNews 2.05 iOS Released

WhoNews 2.05 for iOS is now available from the App Store.

Notifications have been stopped for previous versions of WhoNews.

This version includes support for the new notifications pushed out by the latest version of the WhoNews server. This means notifications are:
    • Generated as they are detected by WhoNews server and not on the current hourly basis.
    • Notifications for News, Blogs, Podcasts and Special/Art streams
    • Control from within WhoNews on the settings page to choose what notifications, if any, you want to receive.

Here is a image of the settings page:

    WhoNews Push Notifications

Over the past few months there have been periods where the notifications pushed to the WhoNews have stopped for short periods. This has been down to service interruptions by the push notification service provider used by WhoNews.

Rest assured I’ve been looking into this and I’m working on modifications to make the service not only more reliable but also more frequent. I’m currently developing my own service which interfaces directly to Apple to send notifications. This also removes a limit of 1 million notifications a month which WhoNews has to use. Some months WhoNews has hit this limit.

The new server modifications will allow me to provide more notifications in future versions of WhoNews. However I appreciate that some users love notifications and a constant stream of updates and others hate them. So future versions of WhoNews will allow you to fully configure notifications.

I’m currently testing the next version of WhoNews and the update service and will keep you informed of developments.

WhoNews 2.04 is now available to download. This release includes the new iPad retina icons and also fixes a problem on iPads using iOS 5.1 which caused WhoNews to crash in portrait orientation.

I’ve just updated WhoNews to support the new iPad 3 retina icons and also fix a problem on iPads using iOS 5.1. When using WhoNews in portrait mode you may experience a crash and WhoNews quitting.

In the meantime I recommend using WhoNews in landscape on an iPad running this version 5.1 of iOS. The new version should be released within a week.
